Open source software is now very widely used and 73% of respondents in a recent Accenture report stated that “open source is changing the way business operates”. In August, a major study found that 79% of IT developers use open source in their development projects and view it as a ‘silver bullet’ that can allows simultaneous improvement along all three dimensions of the software “iron triangle” of cost, schedule, features. Yet many companies do not have a formal structure to manage the use of open source software and to ensure compliance with open source licenses. Major industry players have been sued for lack of compliance. As reported in the news, Oracle has sued Google for breach of the Apache license in its Android product (and patent infringement). Companies need to ensure that they understand these risks and manage them.
The Knowledge Group has assembled a panel of key experts to help address the technical and legal issues associated with Open Source.
Key topics covered:
- Overview of open source software
- Understanding the key provisions of the major open source software licenses
- Analyzing hybrid products which include proprietary and open source software
- Establishing an effective plan to manage the use of open source software and compliance with open source licenses
- Summary of new tools for managing software
