Steven C. Bennett

Steve Bennett's practice at Jones Day focuses on domestic and international commercial litigation and arbitration, including cases involving bankruptcy, construction, corporate, energy, insurance, intellectual property, privacy and data security, and other disputes.

Steve is chair of the Firm's e-Discovery Committee and an active member of the Firm's construction practice team. He co-founded the Sedona Conference Working Group on International E-Discovery. He co-teaches a course on advanced civil procedure (e-discovery) at Rutgers Law School, and similar courses at New York Law School and Fordham. He is a qualified arbitrator for the American Arbitration Association. Steve serves as Hearing Officer pursuant to the consent decree in the Civil RICO case of United States v. Local 14-14B, IUOE (E.D.N.Y.), and served two terms as Election Officer in the settled case of United States v. District Council of Carpenters (S.D.N.Y.). He taught arbitration law at Brooklyn Law School for nine years.

Steve regularly speaks to a wide array of groups for CLE and other purposes. He has written more than 150 articles on a variety of topics. His book, Arbitration: Essential Concepts (ALM) was published in 2002. His book, A Privacy Primer for Corporate Counsel (Aspatore/West) was published in 2009.

Steve writes a continuing column, "Arbitration," with Professor Samuel Estreicher, which has appeared in the New York Law Journal since 2004, and his column, "Computer Law," has appeared in the New York State Bar Association Journal since 2009. He blogs occasionally in the "Thinkernet" series at InternetEvolution.com, and at NLJ.com.

Catherine L. Steege

Catherine L. Steege is a partner in the Firm's Bankruptcy, Workout and Corporate Reorganization Practice and is Co-Chair of the Bankruptcy Litigation Practice. She is also a member of the Tenant-In-Common Workout Task Force. Ms. Steege serves on the Firm’s Management Committee and is Chair of the Finance Committee. Ms. Steege is AV Peer Review Rated, Martindale-Hubbell’s highest peer recognition for ethical standards and legal ability.

Ms. Steege concentrates in bankruptcy and creditors’ rights and frequently represents debtors, creditors, creditors’ committees, trustees and other parties before the bankruptcy courts. In addition to a traditional insolvency practice, she also has frequently handled complex litigation arising out of insolvencies.

She served as lead counsel to Arlington Hospitality and 20 affiliated debtors in their Chapter 11 filing, and subsequently assisted with the sale of its assets to Sunburst Hotel Holdings, Inc. and SJB Equities, Inc. She has represented unsecured creditors committees for Conseco Inc., FV Steel & Wire, ABC-NACO, Anicom, Inc., Payless Cashways, AccessAir, Inc., Charter Behavioral Health Care Systems, Handy Andy Home Improvement Centers, Inc. and represented bondholders or creditors on committees for Jitney-Jungle Stores of America, Penn-Traffic, Metricom and Ha-Lo Industries.

Thomas J. Salerno

Mr. Salerno is a partner and co-chair of the International Insolvency Group in the Phoenix office of the international law firm of Squire, Sanders & Dempsey L.L.P. Mr. Salerno graduated from Rutgers University (B.A. 1979, summa cum laude) and Notre Dame Law School (J.D. 1982, cum laude), where he served as an editor of the Notre Dame Law Review.

Mr. Salerno has participated in international insolvencies in Mexico, Argentina, the Czech Republic, Ecuador, Switzerland, Germany, England, France and the Netherlands. He has represented Industrias Nucleares do Brasil, S/A, the nuclear energy agency of the Brazilian government in insolvency proceedings in Switzerland and the U.S., He participated in the program “Reducing The Risk: Promoting Mutual Understanding In Insolvency Practices” given in San Jose, Costa Rica in August, 1996, which was co-sponsored by the Associación Costarricense de Derecho Internaciónal and the American Bankruptcy Institute and was also a faculty member in the program entitled “U.S.-Dominican Republic Cross-Border Program On Commercial Law, Credit, Collections & Insolvency” given in La Romana, Dominican Republic. He was a featured speaker at the Eleventh Annual International Airline CEO Conference in Miami, and he is a member of the UNCITRAL Working Group on it’s Model Insolvency Law Project. Mr. Salerno headed the U.S. Delegation to the Czech Republic to assist and consult with the Czech Parliament, Supreme Court and practitioners regarding the complete revamping of the Czech Republic’s insolvency law. Mr. Salerno also teaches Comparative International Insolvency at Salzburg Universität. He has testified as an expert in U.S. insolvency law in judicial proceedings in Osnabrück, Germany.

Mr. Salerno has authored and co-authored numerous books, treatises, law review articles and other publications, including The Executive Guide To Corporate Reorganizations, Advanced Chapter 11 Bankruptcy, and Bankruptcy Litigation & Practice: A Practitioner’s Guide.

Mr. Salerno is a member of INSOL, as well as a member of the board of directors and the executive committee of the American Bankruptcy Institute and the American Bankruptcy Board of Certification, Inc., both based in Washington, D.C. Mr. Salerno has been included in The Best Lawyers of America since 1992, is listed in Who’s Who In The World (since 1996), and was named as one of twelve Outstanding Bankruptcy Lawyers by Turnarounds & Workouts (1998 and 2000). He is rated “AV” by Martindale-Hubbell (its highest rating), and is listed as one of 100 nationally recognized restructuring professionals in the U.S. by The K & A Restructuring Register (3rd Ed. 2002; 4th Ed. 2003). Mr. Salerno is also a Fellow of the American College of Bankruptcy based in Washington, D.C. Mr. Salerno speaks English and German.

Craig W. Budner

Mr. Budner's primary area of practice is complex commercial litigation in federal, state and bankruptcy courts.

Mr. Budner has extensive experience representing major creditors and bondholders in bankruptcy-related litigation, as well as in a wide variety of commercial litigation common to financial institutions. Morgan Chase, Tyler Technologies, various litigation trusts, and DII Industries Asbestos PI Trust, a $2.6 billion trust funded by Halliburton.

Alan leads Grant Thornton’s Integrated Case Solutions (ICS) group, which provides case management solutions and information management services to companies and their professionals including:

- Gathering and analysis of client information for vendor disputes or pre-filing activity;
- Preparation of bankruptcy schedules and statements of financial affairs;
- Claims management, processing and reconciliation (including reclamation claim and preference action analysis);
- Reorganization plan and disclosure statement support; and
- Post-confirmation wind-down and distribution services.

Experience
With extensive professional experience in corporate restructuring, data management and law, Alan applies a distinctive legal, business and analytical perspective to find unique and effective solutions for Grant Thornton’s clients. Alan has been involved with key aspects of many of the nation’s largest bankruptcies and distressed situations, including Metaldyne, ATA Airlines, Dana, WR Grace, Allegiance Telecom, Cable & Wireless, USA, Levitz Furniture, Exodus Communications and HealthSouth. He has also worked on virtually all facets of restructuring cases including pre-filing preparation, Chapter 11 case management, reorganization planning and asset sales, and liquidating trust wind-down operations.

Industry experience
Prior to joining Grant Thornton, Alan led the restructuring services division at BMC Group, a claims management and information management firm. Before that, Alan was a Vice President at AlixPartners in the case management services group and a Corporate Restructuring Associate with New York law firm Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP respectively.
